Frequently Asked Questions

How does Australian income tax work?

Australia uses progressive tax brackets: 0% up to $18,200, 16% up to $45,000, 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, and 45% above $190,000 (2024-25). Our calculator also includes Medicare Levy (2%), HELP/HECS student loan repayments, and superannuation contributions.

What is the Medicare Levy?

The Medicare Levy is 2% of taxable income and funds Australia's public healthcare system. Low-income earners may get an exemption or reduction. There's also a Medicare Levy Surcharge (1-1.5%) for high-income earners without private hospital insurance. Our calculator includes both.

How do HELP/HECS student loan repayments work?

HELP (Higher Education Loan Program) repayments are income-contingent. Once your income exceeds the threshold ($54,436 in 2024-25), you pay 1-10% of your income based on income brackets. Repayments are collected through the tax system. Our calculator shows your estimated HELP repayment amount.
